Remote Power-on WOL

WalleCube Smart UPS integrates the WOL (Wake-on-LAN) function. Through this feature, the UPS can automatically wake up your NAS after power is restored, or allow you to remotely turn on your device anytime and anywhere through the app.

What is WOL?

WOL (Wake-on-LAN) is an industry-standard remote wake-up technology. It allows computers in sleep or shutdown states to automatically power on when they receive a special data packet (Magic Packet) sent within the local area network.

Conditions for Use

To successfully use the WOL function, the following three premises must be met:

  1. UPS Connected: WalleCube Smart UPS must be successfully connected to WiFi.
  2. Same LAN Connection: The target device (e.g., NAS) must be connected to the same LAN as the UPS via an Ethernet cable.
  3. Hardware Support: The target device must support the WOL function, and it must be enabled in its BIOS or operating system settings.

Operating Steps

  1. Open App: Enter the “WalleCube” app home page.
  2. Enter Remote Power-on: Click the Remote Power-on menu.
  3. Enter/Select MAC Address: Fill in the MAC address of the target device and execute the operation.

Remote Power-on WOL Configuration

Auto Power-on vs Manual Power-on

WalleCube Smart UPS provides two flexible wake-up methods:

1. Auto Power-on

You can pre-configure multiple groups (up to 8 groups) of MAC addresses in the app. When the UPS detects that mains power is restored and stable, it will automatically and sequentially send WOL commands to these addresses. This is very useful for scenarios that require unattended automatic service recovery after power failure.

2. Manual Power-on

While the UPS is running normally, you can manually send a wake-up command through the app at any time to achieve true “remote power management”.

WOL Activation Guide for NAS Brands

  • Synology: Control Panel > Hardware & Power > General > Check “Enable Wake on LAN”.
  • QNAP: Control Panel > System > Power > Wake-on-LAN (WOL) > Set to “On”.
  • TerraMaster: Control Panel > Hardware & Power > Power > Wake on LAN > Check “Enable Wake on LAN”.
  • UGREEN: Usually only one network port supports Wake-on-LAN (mostly LAN 1), need to enable it in the Control Panel.
  • ZSpace: Official system currently does not support WOL function by default.
  • DIY NAS / PC: Need to enable Wake on LAN, PCI-E Resume, or similar options in the BIOS, and enable wake-up support in the network card driver properties.

Common Questions and Tips

  • No Feedback Mechanism: The WOL protocol itself has no feedback. The UPS is only responsible for issuing the command and cannot confirm if the device successfully started. If the device does not respond, it is recommended to try clicking multiple times with a few seconds interval.
  • MAC Address Accuracy: Please ensure you fill in the physical MAC address of the corresponding network port.
  • Power Recovery Strategy: In addition to WOL, it is recommended to simultaneously enable the NAS’s own “AC Power Recovery” function as double insurance.
